Klondike Race - Camp Keisel

Our troop attended the annual Klondike Derby event sponsored by our district this month. We had great weather for the weekend with clear skies and plenty of snow on the ground but none falling from the sky. It did get pretty cold at night but everyone slept pretty warm. Camp setup went very smooth this year although there wasn't really enough snow for any good snow caving so we all dwelt in tents. Some of the Scouts did some sledding that night and got their snow clothes nice and wet (not a good idea when your camping...).
The next morning we loaded up the Klondike sled and headed down to the nearby Causey Reservoir for the Klondike race where the boys are tested on their Scout skills. We had a little bit of unfortunate luck with one of the boys feeling too sick to participate, our Senior Patrol Leader fell in a hole through the ice up to his waist and the remainder of the troop mistook a ice fisherman at the very far end of the lake for one of the race stations and burned about an hour getting down to him figuring out their mistake and making it back. However they did really well at the race stations with fire building, ice rescue, shelter building, compass use, and first aid.
Yet another good campout overall.
